Vosne-Romanée

#TERROIR: Soil, Climate, Geography, History

The history of the Vosne-Romanée appellation

The history of Vosne-Romanée, an emblematic Burgundy wine appellation, dates back to the Middle Ages. Cultivated under the aegis of the Cluniac abbey of Saint-Vivant, the first vines on this prestigious terroir reached their peak when Louis Ferdinand Bourbon-Conti, the Prince de Conti, acquired a parcel of Romanée in the 18th century, giving birth to the famous grand cru, Romanée-Conti. Despite the upheavals of the French Revolution, the reputation of Vosne-Romanée wines remained intact. In 1866, the commune of Vosne merged its name with that of its most illustrious cru to form Vosne-Romanée. Although the vineyards were affected by the ravages of mildew and phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, their reconstruction enhanced the quality of the wines. In 1909, the establishment of a cooperative winery helped revitalize local viticulture. Official recognition came in 1936 with the registration of the Vosne-Romanée appellation with the INAO, followed in 1943 by the recognition of the climats benefiting from the Premier Cru appellation. Despite its worldwide renown, Vosne-Romanée remains a village where viticulture remains at the heart of its identity and economy.

Geographical location of the Vosne-Romanée appellation

The Vosne-Romanée vineyard is one of the Côte d'Or's most renowned vineyards, located in the Burgundy wine region of France. It extends mainly over the communes of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, along the famous Burgundy Grands Crus route. This vineyard is renowned for producing some of the world's most prestigious and sought-after wines, notably reds made from the Pinot Noir grape. The Vosne-Romanée and Vosne Romanée Premier Cru appellations may or may not be followed by the name of their Climat d'origine.

Terroir of the Vosne-Romanée appellation

The Vosne-Romanée appellation benefits from an exceptional terroir characterized by limestone soils interspersed with clayey marl, varying in depth from a few dozen centimeters to one meter. These shallow soils are underlain by Middle Jurassic clays and limestones, providing an ideal base for vine-growing. The vines face east, stretching out on either side of the Grands Crus, either at the top of the hillside or on the foothills, sometimes at the same altitude as the adjacent Grands Crus.

At the top of the slope, shallow soils dominated by Middle Jurassic limestone are stony, while at mid-slope, a marl-limestone subsoil with clay offers thicker soils. The foothills are characterized by conglomerate limestone formations, with clay and silt alluvium resulting from erosion. The climate, influenced by cool oceanic, southern and continental aspects, features marked seasons, particularly in winter, contributing to the complexity of the wines produced in this exceptional region.

This combination of soils and exposure gives Vosne-Romanée wines a distinct complexity and elegance, contributing to their worldwide renown.

The red wines of the Vosne-Romanée appellation are distinguished by their deep ruby-red color, revealing their concentration and richness. Their structured, spicy character gives these wines remarkable aromatic complexity and depth on the palate. A wine for ageing, of course, balancing richness and tannins, texture and architecture under a lively attack. As great red wines of Burgundy, examples of Vosne-Romanée reveal exceptional ageing potential. We recommend cellaring for at least 5 years before tasting, although the finest cuvées can be kept for 10 to 15 years, or even longer, to reach their peak of maturity and fully express their sublime character.

What does Vosne-Romanée taste like?

Vosne-Romanée, a red wine from Burgundy's Côte de Nuits region, offers a complex taste experience. Its aromas of ripe fruit (strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant) evolve with age towards notes of brandied cherry, leather and undergrowth on a spicy background, making up its frequent bouquet. This complex of mellow, refined aromas evolves with age towards brandied cherry, confit, leather and fur, and the game of returning from hunting in the woods. The nose presents aromas of ripe fruit such as blackcurrant, strawberry and raspberry. Its fiery red color ranges from pure ruby to dark purple. A deep, refined, vermeil wine, a true symbol of the finesse of Burgundy wines.

What to serve with Vosne-Romanée?

Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy's opulent red wine, goes perfectly with a variety of dishes, highlighting its fruity flavors, lively acidity and elegance. When to drink Vosne-Romanée
