Champagne Egly-Ouriet

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Champagne Egly-Ouriet

The history of Champagne Egly-Ouriet dates back to its foundation in 1945 in Ambonnay, in the Champagne region. Since then, the house has flourished thanks to its dedication to producing champagnes of exceptional quality, perpetuating a savoir-faire handed down from generation to generation.

Francis Egly, the current owner and winemaker, is heir to a vineyard nearly 40 years old, composed mainly of Pinot Noir vines classified as Grand Cru in Bouzy, Verzenay and above all Ambonnay. Francis' marriage to Madame Ouriet gave the house its name, Egly-Ouriet.

What particularly sets Egly-Ouriet champagnes apart is their traditional, artisanal approach to winemaking. Grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness and vinified with care, followed by prolonged ageing on lees in oak barrels.

Since 1999, the company has chosen not to carry out malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the natural freshness of the wines. Disgorgement dates are systematically indicated on the back labels, giving consumers a precise indication of the age and freshness of the champagnes.

Thanks to its commitment to quality and respect for tradition, Maison Egly-Ouriet has earned an undisputed reputation for excellence in the world of champagne. Despite its small production, it ranks among the top ten champagne houses, attesting to the recognition of its peers and champagne lovers the world over.

The Terroir of Champagne Egly-Ouriet

The terroir of Champagne Egly-Ouriet, located on the Grand Cru d'Ambonnay, is at the historic heart of the estate, with 8 hectares dedicated mainly to Pinot Noir and the rest divided between Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. This region lies to the south-east of the Montagne de Reims, a wine-growing area renowned for the quality of its crus.

The clay-limestone soils of this terroir on the Montagne de Reims are typical of France's grands crus, and provide a favorable environment for vines. Its composition ensures good drainage and provides the vines with the mineral elements essential for their development. This particularity of the soil contributes to the complexity and finesse of the wines produced by Egly-Ouriet.

The southeast exposure of the vineyards is also a key factor in ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. This orientation guarantees maximum exposure to the sun, favoring uniform and complete ripening of the grapes, which translates into balanced levels of sugar and acidity in the berries, and therefore in the final wine.

In addition, the estate's "culture raisonnée" approach demonstrates a commitment to environmentally-friendly practices, resulting in exceptional Champagnes.

    The Egly-Ouriet Champagne vineyard

The 16-hectare vineyard is located in the Grands Crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay on the Montagnes de Reims. With an average age of the vines of around 40 years, the vineyard benefits from the necessary maturity to produce grapes of the highest quality. It is characterized by a meticulous, artisanal approach to winemaking, aimed at producing champagnes of exceptional quality while preserving the unique identity of each terroir.

Since 1999, the domaine has opted not to carry out malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the wine's natural freshness. In addition, disgorgement dates are indicated on the back labels, giving consumers a precise indication of the age and freshness of the champagne.

A particular feature is the use of oak barrels for aging. Since 1995, Francis Egly has been adjusting the proportion of barrels aged between 1 and 5 years according to the characteristics of the harvest and the wine. This approach allows each terroir to express itself fully, rather than following a standardized recipe.

Egly-Ouriet champagnes benefit from barrel aging, followed by long ageing on laths. Brut champagnes are marketed only after four years' ageing, and vintage champagnes can wait up to six years before being released.
