Champagne Krug

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

History of Champagne Krug

The House of Krug, founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, is the fruit of the vision of an extraordinary man, driven by an uncompromising philosophy. His aim was to create the best Champagne every year, regardless of climatic variations. To achieve this excellence, Joseph Krug paid meticulous attention to the character of each vineyard, respecting the individuality of each plot and building up a vast library of reserve wines from different years. Taking a traditional approach to Champagne-making, he decided to transcend the notion of vintage to produce quintessential Champagne every year. Thus, he established a Maison where all Champagnes are elevated to the same level of exception. For six generations, the Krug family has perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder's vision and know-how to maintain the House's reputation for excellence.

Krug Champagne House

Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a non-conformist visionary, the House has always aimed to create the best Champagne every year, in spite of climatic variations. By focusing on terroir, respecting each parcel and its wine, and building a rich library of reserve wines, Joseph Krug made his dream come true.

This traditional approach has transcended the notion of vintage to produce, year after year, the most generous Champagne. Thus, the House is committed to maintaining an equal level of distinction for all its Champagnes. For six generations, the Krug family has perpetuated this vision, enriching the heritage and know-how of the founder.

The terroir of Krug Champagne

Krug Champagnes derive their excellence from the exceptional terroirs of the Champagne region, notably from three key wine-growing areas: the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

Appellation Champagne :

The Champagne appellation, located in northeastern France, is world-famous for its top-quality sparkling wine. It imposes strict production standards, favoring the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties, and uses the traditional method to create natural bubbles in the wine. The region's unique terroir, characterized by chalky soils and a cool climate, contributes to the complexity of the wines. The classification of vineyards as "Grand Cru" and "Premier Cru" underlines the exceptional quality of certain terroirs. Protected by law, the "Champagne" appellation symbolizes luxury and is associated with moments of celebration around the world, offering a diverse range of cuvées, from brut to vintage and prestige, each with its own distinct personality.

All about Krug cuvées :

Krug Grande Cuvée Brut is an exceptional Champagne from the Champagne region of France. It is distinguished by its blend of grape varieties, with a base of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, which bring remarkable aromatic complexity. Aged for seven years on its lees, this Champagne reveals unique depth and elegance. It is available in standard 0.75-liter or magnum formats. When tasting Krug Dosage Brut, you'll be enchanted by its subtle aromas of hazelnut and nougat, which add a gourmet touch to this memorable taste experience.

Krug rosé is distinguished by its blend of grape varieties, combining Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, giving it a diversity of aromas and flavors. It is carefully aged for five years on lees, allowing slow maturation that contributes to its complexity and richness. Its subtle, seductive aromas are composed of citrus notes that bring a vibrant freshness, while berries add a delicate fruity touch. Finally, honey balances the whole with a subtle sweetness. This cuvée embodies the elegance and finesse of Champagne, offering a memorable taste experience for connoisseurs and wine lovers alike.

Krug Millésimes or Vintage, for the House of Krug, the approach to Champagne Krug Millésime is resolutely unique and imbued with philosophy. Unlike other vintage Champagnes, which simply select the best wines from a given year, Krug Millésime goes further. It's not just about choosing the most prestigious vintages of the year, but capturing the essence, history and uniqueness of that specific year.

Krug Clos du Mesnil is a true gem among Krug Champagnes. It embodies the quintessence of singularity and exclusivity, highlighting the exceptional character of a parcel of Chardonnay vines from a single harvest.

Krug Clos d'Ambonnay is truly a marvel of Krug craftsmanship. It comes from a remarkable terroir, the Clos d'Ambonnay, a tiny parcel of vines measuring just 0.68 hectares. This walled vineyard is a hidden gem, a precious treasure of Pinot Noir vines, the emblematic red grape of Champagne. Almost since the creation of the House of Krug, Clos d'Ambonnay has been the main supplier of these exceptional grapes, which bring a unique depth, complexity and intensity to the House's Champagnes.

Krug collection, the collection brings together a very limited number of bottles of each Krug Vintage, carefully preserved in our cellars. They wait patiently to mature and reveal new nuances of character. When the time comes to cork them, a Vintage Krug joins the collection, adding a new dimension to its already remarkable history.

Krug vintages, exceptional years

Krug's vintage Champagnes are created by selecting the most emblematic wines of the year in question. These wines are then meticulously matured for over ten years in our cellars, allowing them to fully develop their character and complexity.
