Domaine Faiveley

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Domaine Faiveley

The history of Domaine Faiveley is the saga of seven generations of Burgundy producers, established in Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825. From Pierre Faiveley, founder of the estate, to Erwan Faiveley, in charge of the family business, shaping the history and evolution of Domaine Faiveley. While Pierre laid the foundations, it was under Guy Faiveley's strong influence that the estate evolved considerably, notably marking the creation of the Chevaliers du Tastevin in 1934. This brotherhood, established in a time of crisis, has become a symbol of celebration and sharing of Burgundy wines. In this way, the Faiveley family's history is closely linked to that of their region and its wines, testifying to a winegrowing heritage rich in tradition and innovation.

Erwan Faiveley, seventh generation of the family

Erwan Faiveley, representing the seventh generation of the family, was born and raised in Burgundy, where he worked on the development of the estate with his sister, Eve Faiveley. The Faiveley family pioneered many innovations, such as the invention of the pantograph and the use of the manual grape sorting table. Visionaries, they also acquired many hectares of vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise at a time when their potential was not yet fully recognized.

Art and Wine at Domaine Faiveley: An Inspiring Alliance

Art occupies a central place at Domaine Faiveley, transcending the boundaries between wine and creativity. The family's artistic heritage is reflected in landmark encounters, such as that with the illustrious sculptor Auguste Rodin. Le Baiser de Rodin, an emblematic sculpture at the heart of the estate, bears witness to this alliance between art and viticulture. As a tribute to this singular relationship, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze "Les Ouvrées Rodin" embodies the fusion between the finesse of Côte de Nuits wines and the elegance of sculptural art. In addition, the Clos des Issarts, passionately restored by the Faiveley family, becomes a haven of inspiration for artist Laëtitia de Bazelaire, illustrating the symbiosis between art, nature and wine. This intimate connection with art enriches the experience at Domaine Faiveley, offering visitors a captivating immersion in the beauty and emotion of artistic encounters.

The Terroir of Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley's diverse terroir extends throughout Burgundy, with a marked presence in the Côte de Nuits. The soils and climate of this region are essential for the production of high-quality wines. The domaine's vineyards benefit from a variety of soils, from clay-limestone to stony, offering a wide diversity of terroirs. Burgundy's continental climate, with its hot summers and cold winters, favors slow, gradual ripening of the grapes, enabling the wines to develop aromatic complexity and balanced structure.

Domaine Faiveley's distinctive Pinot Noir in Burgundy

More recently, Domaine Faiveley has broadened its horizons by deciding to explore California Pinot Noirs. This bold decision reflects the Faiveley family's constant quest for innovation and excellence. By venturing into new terroirs, they seek to push back the boundaries of their expertise and discover new expressions of the Pinot Noir grape, while remaining true to their commitment to quality and authenticity.
