Château Tournefeuille

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Château Tournefeuille

Château Tournefeuille, located in Néac, has a history spanning several centuries. With Celtic origins dating back 3,000 years, the terroir saw the birth of agricultural activity evolving into viticulture in the Middle Ages, fostered by the Hospitaliers de Lalande de Pomerol and trade with the English. However, hardships such as the Hundred Years' War and the phylloxera crisis tempered its development.

Four Centuries, Four Key Moments

In 1783, the place called Tournefeuille was mentioned in a map, marking the beginning of a new era for the vineyard. In 1850, Victor Tastet built a winery representative of the period, followed 24 years later by Camille Decout, who reinforced his reputation. In 1939, the Sautarel family settled in Tournefeuille, marking the beginning of an era of evolution under the leadership of Léon, André and Jacques Sautarel. In 1998, the Petit et Cambier family took over, and the vineyard expanded with the acquisition of new vintages.

Today, the Petit family passionately continues this winemaking tradition, also welcoming visitors to their guest house and offering a varied range of wines, including Château Tournefeuille, Château Tournefeuille La Cure, Rosalcy and Château La Révérence.

The origin of the name Château Tournefeuille

Château Tournefeuille takes its name from its geographical location. It is located on a slope exposed to the wind, which favors ventilation of the vines, an important factor for the health of the grapes. Swirling winds are common in this region, hence the word "tourne" in "Tournefeuille". "Feuille" refers to vine leaves, but also to refreshing breezes. Thus, the name "Tournefeuille" evokes both the movement of the winds and their role in viticulture, reflecting the history and characteristics of the estate.

Château Tournefeuille terroir

Extending over 18 hectares, the terroir of Château Tournefeuille is a true gem nestled in the village of Néac, in the heart of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation. It is distinguished by its vineyards, which are spread over four distinct terroirs, each making its own contribution to the complexity of the wines produced:

The south-facing hillside on swelling clays produces wines of great roundness and density, with remarkable power and length on the palate, dominated by Merlot.

The gravelly hilltop favors early ripening of the grapes. The resulting wines are elegant and complex, benefiting particularly from Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon.

A second north-facing slope, on gravelly clay, reveals all its splendor in warm vintages. Cabernet Francs are particularly well-suited here.

A clay-limestone plateau with shaking soils, stretching towards the village of Néac, produces powerful, well-structured wines, thanks in particular to the Merlots.

La Cure, an exceptional terroir

Château Tournefeuille's "La Cure" terroir is an exceptional parcel located near the old presbytery in Néac, facing the great names of Pomerol. This terroir stands out for its location on a magnificent clay-gravel hillside with a south-westerly exposure. The deep soils, composed of clay and gravel, provide ideal conditions for the vines to flourish. This unique terroir produces elegant, refined wines that are true expressions of the Pomerol style.
