#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Château de Saint Cosme

Château de Saint Cosme, located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation, is a historic wine estate with a rich history dating back to Gallo-Roman times. It is famous for its perfectly preserved rock-cut fermentation vats, which offer a unique insight into ancient viticulture. Acquired by the Barruol family in 1490, the estate has seen 15 generations of winemakers.

The Saint Cosme vineyard, comprising 22 hectares of old vines, benefits from an exceptional terroir due to the complex geology of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The vines, on average 60 years old, produce low yields but high quality. The estate's particular microclimate, characterized by its freshness, contributes to the balance and finesse of the wines.

The Chapelle de Saint Cosme, a Romanesque building dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, is another of the estate's jewels, symbolizing the simplicity and purity of this architectural art. Since 1972, under the impetus of Henri Barruol, organic viticulture has been practiced to respect the vines and preserve the ecosystem.

In 1997, a wine merchant was created to exploit the region's often neglected terroirs, with a meticulous, artisanal approach. Today, Saint Cosme stands out for its authentic, balanced, age-worthy wines, faithfully reflecting their terroir and origin.

The terroir of Château de Saint Cosme

The vineyard of Le Poste, located near the Chapelle de Saint Cosme, was planted in 1963 by Henri Barruol. This locality has a rich history, dating back to Jean IV de Chalon-Arlay, Prince of Orange, who ceded land for viticulture in 1480. The soil of Le Poste consists mainly of Jurassic limestone marl, rich in marine fossils, providing an exceptional terroir for vines. This unique soil gives the wines refined mineral notes, contributing to their delicate, feminine character.

Le Claux, a 1.8-hectare parcel first mentioned in 1902, is distinguished by its clay and limestone marl soils, dotted with small, sharp gravels on the surface. This terroir almost disappeared in 1914, but was preserved due to wartime and economic constraints. The characteristics of the Le Claux soil give rise to complex, fine wines, often described as "Burgundian" in style because of their elegance and aromatic depth.

Hominis Fides is one of Saint Cosme's oldest vineyards, mentioned as early as 1902. The soils of this parcel are composed of non-stony calcareous sands, derived from Helvetian safre dating back 14 million years. The hard safre parent rock often outcrops to less than one meter, creating a very calcareous terroir. This soil, combined with the region's unique climate, produces powerful, soft wines with a silky mouthfeel and distinctive tannins. This exceptional terroir allows Hominis Fides wines to stand out for their depth and complexity.
