Château Suduiraut

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Château Suduiraut, survivor of fire and pillage

Château Suduiraut, founded in 1580 following the marriage of Nicole d'Allard to Léonard de Suduiraut, has a fascinating history.

Rebuilt in the 17th century after being destroyed during the Fronde, it was renamed Cru du Roy at the end of the 18th century by Jean Joseph Duroy, a member of the Suduiraut family. The magnificent formal gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, add to its prestige.

Classified as a Premier Cru in 1855, the estate is renowned for its excellence. In 1992, it was acquired by AXA Millésimes, committed to perpetuating its heritage and allowing its Sauternes wines to shine. The Sauternes region, where the château is located, is famous for its sweet and syrupy wines, influenced by the history of Dutch merchants in the 17th century.

The burning and looting of Château Suduiraut during the Fronde was a tragic event that took place against a backdrop of rebellion and conflict in France between 1648 and 1653. The exact circumstances of the burning and looting of Château Suduiraut may not be fully documented, but they reflect the power struggles and social tensions of the time.

The terroir of Château Suduiraut in Preignac, Bordeaux

The Château Suduiraut estate, located in the commune of Preignac, benefits from an exceptional terroir certified as High Environmental Value, with 91 hectares of vines planted on sandy-clay gravel soils.

These soils enable the grapes to ripen rapidly, giving the wine a distinctive opulence. The low planting density and high average age of the vines guarantee quality harvests, while the careful choice of grape varieties, dominated by Semillon (90%) and Sauvignon Blanc (10%), creates sweet wines rich in aroma and finesse.

The proximity of the Ciron river favors the development of noble rot, essential to the production of renowned Sauternes wines.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

Sauternes appellation

The Sauternes appellation, located in the Bordeaux region, produces renowned sweet wines. These wines are made from grapes affected by noble rot, giving rich aromas of tropical fruit, honey and candied citrus. They are balanced by refreshing acidity, offering an elegant, complex taste experience. Sauternes wines are often enjoyed with desserts or blue cheeses, but can also be enjoyed on their own for their unique refinement.

Château Suduiraut vineyard

The vineyards of Château Suduiraut are the fruit of meticulous and humble work, where every gesture in the cellar is executed with precision. Pressing is carried out slowly and carefully to extract the finest juices, which are then vinified and aged in oak barrels. Under the supervision of Patrick Douret, vineyard manager, the aim is to sublimate the fabulous terroir for which he is responsible.

An AXA Millésimes company, with Christian Seely at the helm, Michel Essartier in the vineyards and Caroline Chevalier in the cellar, Château Suduiraut is now run by Christian Seely, accompanied by Pierre Montégut, technical director. Vinification is entrusted to cellar master Caroline Gendry, who oversees every stage of the process.

The wines are aged in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, with a balanced proportion of 50% new barrels and 50% barrels that have already contained a wine, resulting in wines of great complexity and elegance.
