Château Pédesclaux

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

History of Château Pédesclaux

Château Pédesclaux is a wine estate located in the commune of Pauillac, in the Médoc region of France. Founded in 1810 by wine broker Pierre-Urbain Pédesclaux, the château owes its name to its founder. Over the years, the estate expanded, notably through the acquisition of new plots of land, some of which came from Château Grand Puy in Pauillac, in 1821.

In 1841, a winery was built in the center of Pauillac, marking the beginning of a significant expansion of the estate, which now covers almost 8 hectares. Over the course of its history, the château has changed owners several times. In 1951, Lucien Jugla took over ownership of the estate, having managed it since 1930. Under his leadership, Château Pédesclaux continued to prosper, with acquisitions of neighboring estates bringing its total surface area to 49 hectares.

In 2013, Emmanuel Cruse took over the reins of the château as general manager, alongside owners Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti. Together, their ambition is to elevate Château Pédesclaux to the ranks of the Médoc's greatest names, while preserving its heritage and age-old winemaking tradition.

The Château Pédesclaux vineyard

Château Pédesclaux's vineyards, once cultivated using integrated farming methods, have now been successfully converted to organic and certified farming.

Since the inauguration of a new fully gravity-fed winery in 2014, equipped with 58 double-deck truncated-cone stainless steel tanks, the estate has reached new heights in terms of technology and quality. The in-depth renovation of the vineyard, coupled with the acquisition of new, high-quality plots, testifies to the unwavering commitment to excellence.

In keeping with its ambitious vision of viticultural expansion, the estate also acquired Château Lilian Ladouys in 2008. To bring these major projects to fruition, Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti surround themselves with the best experts, such as Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen as technical director, Eric Boissenot as consultant oenologist, and the renowned architect, urban planner and designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte.

Who owns Château Pédesclaux?

Château Pédesclaux is owned by the Lorenzetti family, who have instilled a friendly yet rigorous dynamic into the estate. Jacky, Françoise and Manon Lorenzetti run this family project together, driven by a shared passion for wine and a deep respect for the land and those who cultivate it. Accompanied by their daughter Manon, who embodies the new generation, and supported by Emmanuel Cruse and Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen, the Lorenzetti family is fully committed to the quest for excellence at Château Pédesclaux. Together, they aim to perpetuate an exceptional winemaking tradition and strengthen the estate's growing reputation.

Visit the unusual architecture of Château Pédesclaux

The architecture of Château Pédesclaux, the result of a collaboration with architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, elegantly blends modernity with respect for the terroir. The buildings, characterized by their simplicity and transparency, house a revolutionary gravity-fed winery, designed to preserve the quality of the grapes and their aromas. This architectural feat, completed in 2014, testifies to the Lorenzetti family's commitment to winemaking excellence, combining aesthetics and functionality in a setting where every detail is designed to magnify the wine.

Château Pédesclaux terroir

Nestled in the heart of the prestigious Médoc terroir, Château Pédesclaux stands proudly, benefiting from a geological heritage dating back 40 million years. Its history is intertwined with that of this renowned wine-growing region, which saw the birth of its first châteaux in the 17th and 18th centuries.

This prestigious estate perfectly embodies the richness of its complex terroir. The clays give power and structure to the wines, while the gravels reveal a subtle elegance, typical of the best Médoc crus. The soils, derived from Graves garonnaises on a limestone bedrock, offer a mosaic of nuances, conducive to the expression of great wines.

With a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in its vineyards, Château Pédesclaux is committed to organic farming, guaranteeing the quality and longevity of its wines.
