History of Château Pavie Macquin
Château Pavie Macquin is a historic estate founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, a pioneer of French viticulture. Faced with the devastating threat of phylloxera, Macquin introduced the use of grafted plants, an innovation that saved French vineyards from destruction. This crucial contribution not only preserved the region's winegrowing heritage, but also solidified the estate's reputation.
Today, Château Pavie Macquin is still in the hands of Albert Macquin's descendants, who continue to enhance this exceptional heritage. Nestled on a privileged site, the vineyard benefits from ideal conditions for growing Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines produced here, dominated by Merlot, are distinguished by their generosity and robustness. Through decades of dedication and innovation, the Corre-Macquin family has breathed new energy into the estate, elevating Château Pavie Macquin to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B. Preserving France's winegrowing heritage is a perpetual mission for the owners of Château Pavie Macquin. Albert Macquin's introduction of rootstock laid the foundations for resilient viticulture. His descendants have pursued this quest for excellence, enabling the château's wines to achieve the prestigious classification of Premier Grand Cru Classé B de Saint-Émilion. This recognition testifies to the exceptional quality and enduring reputation of Château Pavie Macquin wines.
The terroir of Château Pavie Macquin
Thanks to its clay-limestone soil, this vineyard produces powerful, fleshy, mineral, fresh and generous wines. The predominance of Merlot in the vineyard is particularly well-suited to clay soils, giving the wines unique depth and tension. The molasse and asteriated limestone of these soils bring great power and taut structure, while the ancient colluvium soils, enriched with silt, add a certain lightness, while maintaining the mineral tension characteristic of limestone. Cabernet Franc, meanwhile, flourishes on limestone soils where the rock is close to the surface, benefiting from faster warming. This variety brings complex structure and extra depth to the blend. Finally, the 2% old Cabernet Sauvignon completes the blend, adding a final touch of complexity and elegance. The 15 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, located on the right bank of the Garonne, enable Château Pavie Macquin to reveal the full richness of its clay-limestone terroir.
#WINES OF THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées
Saint-Émilion appellation
The Saint-Émilion appellation, located in the Bordeaux wine region, is one of the oldest and most prestigious in France. Saint-Émilion is unique among Bordeaux appellations because of its regularly revised classification system, introduced in 1955. The two main categories are Grand Cru Classé and Premier Grand Cru Classé, the latter being subdivided into Premier Grand Cru Classé A and Premier Grand Cru Classé B.
Saint-Émilion wines are renowned for their elegance, aromatic richness and ageing potential. Dominated by Merlot, these wines are often more accessible young than those of other Bordeaux appellations, yet offer great complexity and depth. The nose is pure, revealing aromas of black fruit and plum. Merlot adds roundness and fruitiness, while Cabernet Franc adds structure and finesse.
