Domaine Haut-Marbuzet

#Property : History and Terroir

The history of Domaine Haut-Marbuzet

Hervé Duboscq's exceptional vineyard

Inherited by Pétronille and Rose Fatin, the vines were taken over in 1825 by the Mac Carthy family, descendants of Jacobite emigrants. The estate was then divided into several parcels following a succession dispute. As a result, 7 hectares fell to the Poissonnier family, who named this part of the estate "Haut-Marbuzet".

This winegrowing estate, located in Marbuzet, in the southern part of the Saint-Estèphe commune, really began its journey in 1952 under the direction of Hervé Duboscq, of the Duboscq family.

At the time, Hervé Duboscq, a colorful wine merchant, acquired the property's 7 hectares of vines as a viager. The purchase was made from the owner at the time, Mr Lambert, who had inherited the vines following the division of the vast Mac Carthy family estate in 1854.

Over time, Hervé Duboscq undertook successive purchases of the former Mac Carthy estates, reconstituting a vineyard that today covers 70 hectares. This vineyard is remarkably well located in Marbuzet, near Cos d'Estournel, in the Saint-Estèphe region.

In the 1970s, Hervé's son Henri Duboscq gradually took over responsibility for the estate. Thanks to his exceptional personality and bold viticultural and winemaking choices, Henri Duboscq helped raise Haut-Marbuzet's reputation and quality to a level considered by many to be close to the appellation's finest crus. In 2003, Haut-Marbuzet was classified as an exceptional Cru Bourgeois, in recognition of its excellence.

Among Henri Duboscq's innovative choices was the early and intensive use of 100% new oak barrels, the first to do so. He placed particular emphasis on the importance of the choice of wood, demonstrating his commitment to the quality and distinctive expression of the wines produced by Haut-Marbuzet. These decisions helped forge Haut-Marbuzet's reputation and success within the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

Since 1952, as an independent family estate, Haut-Marbuzet has been driven by the successive commitment of Hervé and then Henri Duboscq, propelling the estate to the top rank of the appellation.

In 2009, the Liv-ex (London International Vintners Exchange) website proposed a revised Bordeaux classification. Chateau Haut-Marbuzet was virtually ranked 4th Grand Cru Classé.

Terroir of Domaine Haut-Marbuzet

Château Haut-Marbuzet, spread over some 70 hectares, benefits from an exceptional terroir, characteristic of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Overlooking the Gironde, it lies on a ridge of Günzian gravel on a clay-limestone subsoil. This exceptional terroir provides the estate with ideal conditions for viticulture, producing a wine with a personalized style.

The owners of Château Haut-Marbuzet have made precise choices to maximize the quality of the grapes. They have opted for a high planting density, with 9,000 vines per hectare, favoring higher-quality bunches without increasing yields. Harvesting is carefully timed to begin when the grapes reach near-over-ripeness. The grapes are then aged in 100% new oak barrels.

These meticulous choices throughout the production process contribute to the creation of a wine with a distinct, voluptuous style. Château Haut-Marbuzet produces a powerful, spicy wine with a flamboyant style and exotic aromas. The attention paid to each stage of viticulture and vinification is reflected in the unique personality of its wines, marked by a distinctive smoothness of tannin.

A special terroir composed of blue clay

A remarkable feature is the presence of blue clay in the soil, especially on plots planted with old Merlot vines. This unique characteristic gives Haut-Marbuzet wines a distinctive, inimitable character, making the château a singular property within the appellation.#Estate wines: Appellation and Cuvées

The Saint-Estèphe appellation

The Saint-Estèphe appellation, located on the left bank of the Gironde, embodies the quintessence of Bordeaux red wines. Its diverse terroir, composed of gravel, clay-limestone and sand, gives the wines a unique complexity. The main grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, combined with a favorable oceanic climate, enable the production of deep, powerful wines. Saint-Estèphe's winemakers, committed to traditional methods, often prefer to age their wines in oak barrels. The result: wines renowned for their robust tannic structure, complex aromas of black fruit, liquorice and tobacco, and their ability to age gracefully. Among the appellation's leading châteaux, Cos d'Estournel, Montrose and Calon-Ségur shine alongside Haut-Marbuzet, all contributing to Saint-Estèphe's exceptional reputation in the wine world.

Château Haut-Marbuzet
Baron de Marbuzet

Château Haut-Marbuzet stands out as the estate's flagship cuvée, symbolizing its excellence and the quintessence of its terroir. It is generally made with meticulous attention to the selection of the finest grapes. This emblematic cuvée faithfully reflects the identity of the vineyard, expressing all its specificity through unique characteristics. Often regarded as the jewel in the crown, Château Haut-Marbuzet benefits from meticulous vinification and ageing, aimed at magnifying the intrinsic qualities of the grapes harvested from the estate's most exceptional plots.

Baron de Marbuzet, meanwhile, represents an alternative interpretation of the Haut-Marbuzet style. As the estate's second wine, it offers a more accessible approach while preserving remarkable quality and complexity. This cuvée is often made from larger selections of grapes harvested from the vineyard, creating a more affordable wine, ready to be enjoyed earlier than its main counterpart. While retaining the estate's distinctive imprint, Baron de Marbuzet offers a seductive entry into the world of Haut-Marbuzet wines, with its own personality and elegance.
