#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
History of Château Bouscaut
Château Bouscaut, perched 34 meters above sea level on the left bank of the Garonne in the commune of Cadaujac, Gironde, is a family estate of over 40 hectares. Founded in the 19th century, it has now been in the hands of the Lurton-Cogombles family for some twenty years. Its unique terroir, dominated by clay on limestone bedrock, produces exceptional wines.
Classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in red and white since 1953, Château Bouscaut is one of the six Grands Crus Classés in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, benefiting from an AOC. Château Bouscaut was acquired 43 years ago by Lucien Lurton, who already owned a dozen grands crus, including Brane-Cantenac in Margaux and Climens in Barsac. Since 1992, it has been in the hands of Sophie Lurton and her husband Laurent Cogombles, joined by their son Armand.
What's the difference between Château Bouscaut and Château Lamothe-Bouscaut?
Château Bouscaut and Château Lamothe-Bouscaut are separate estates with different owners and management teams. Although Château Bouscaut acquired Château Lamothe-Bouscaut in 1999, each estate retains its own identity and independence. It should be noted that the estate also produces the neighboring Châteaux Lamothe-Bouscaut and Valoux.
Château Bouscaut terroir
The terroir of Château Bouscaut is remarkable, composed of clay resting on high-quality limestone. This combination of soils provides the vines with ideal conditions for producing grapes of excellent quality, rich in character and complexity. The clays ensure good water retention, allowing the vines to hydrate optimally, while the limestone rocks provide natural drainage, favoring deep root development and a subtle expression of terroir. This harmonious marriage of soils provides an environment conducive to the cultivation of traditional Bordeaux grape varieties, giving rise to elegant, expressive wines that are true to their origin and terroir.
