Champagne Philipponnat

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

History of Champagne Philipponnat

April le Philipponnat has owned land in Aÿ since 1522, and two of the House's current cuvées pay tribute to this heritage. The family coat of arms, featuring a red and gold checkerboard, was registered in the Armorial de France in 1698, attesting to the Philipponnat family's ancestral roots in the heart of Champagne for nearly two centuries.

During the Second Empire, the Philipponnats were both vineyard owners and wine merchants, dedicated to the creation of sparkling wines. In 1910, Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat established themselves in Mareuil sur Aÿ, in the former cellars of the château dating from the 17th century, breathing modern commercial dynamism into the House, despite the conflicts and the phylloxera crisis. In 1935, a major intuition guided Pierre Philipponnat towards the acquisition of Clos des Goisses, a unique vineyard in Champagne, facing south on a hillside. Breaking with tradition, he produced a remarkable wine from a single cru. Subsequent generations developed the House's image, first in France, then abroad.

In 1997, Philipponnat joined the Boizel Chanoine Champagne group. Charles Philipponnat, a descendant of Auguste, took over the reins of the House, injecting the necessary energy into its international expansion. Since then, Philipponnat has continued to grow, gaining increasing recognition from critics and connoisseurs alike. In 2003, new winemaking facilities, including a barrel cellar, marked the culmination of Philipponnat's mastery of wine quality.

Maison Philipponnat, Mareuil sur Ay

Philipponnat crafts its wines with care, using the finest grapes, mainly from Premiers and Grands Crus, exclusively in cuvée (first press). The house attaches great importance to harvesting grapes that are riper than the Champagne average. A proportion of the wines are fermented or aged in barrels, a rare practice in Champagne, bringing greater complexity without overloading the wines.

The wines undergo bottle ageing on their lees for a period ranging from three to eleven years, which contributes to their development. The House cultivates a distinctive style that does not follow trends, favoring Champagnes that are above all wines: rich in flavor, powerful and balanced. Aromatic intensity, particularly from Pinot Noir, is a common feature, while freshness and minerality are key elements of their profile.

Philipponnat maintains a low dosage to preserve this perfect balance between intensity and freshness. Older vintages are kept "on point" in the "Caveau du Trésor" and disgorged on demand after long ageing. In addition to the three non-vintage and three vintage cuvées, the collection includes prestige cuvées such as Cuvée 1522, Cuvée 1522 Rosé, Clos des Goisses and Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé.

The terroir of Champagne Philipponnat

Located in the heart of the Champagne region, Maison Philipponnat is deeply rooted in an exceptional heritage that gives it a unique identity. Within its sumptuous historic cellars dating from the 18th century, which were once the domain of Château de Mareuil, lies a rich winegrowing history. However, the jewel in the crown of this heritage lies in an exceptional site that has been unrivalled throughout the Champagne region for almost a century: the Clos des Goisses.

In the old Champagne dialect, "Gois" or "Goisse" means an extremely steep hillside. But Clos des Goisses is much more than that; it embodies the warmest terroir in the entire Champagne region. From sunrise to sunset, there's not a shadow to be found on the surface of this pure chalk hillside, with its full southern exposure.

This privileged terroir gives the grapes grown here exceptional ripeness, flavor concentration and finesse. The vines that bravely cling to this steep slope produce grapes of extraordinary quality, which are then carefully vinified to create the prestigious cuvées of Maison Philipponnat. Clos des Goisses, with its unique microclimate and pure chalk soil, is the very soul of this Champagne house, a precious treasure that embodies the passion and know-how handed down from generation to generation. This exceptional parcel symbolizes the quintessence of the Champagne terroir and gives birth to exceptional wines that celebrate the excellence of the region and the age-old viticultural tradition of the Maison Philipponnat.

The Champagne Philipponnat box collections

The Champagne Philipponat collection offers a variety of cuvées adapted to gastronomy, from non-vintage to prestige cuvées. Here's an overview of these collections:

Le Temps: Royale Réserve

The three cuvées, honoring the Philipponnat family's ancestors, come from the finest vineyards of Champagne's Premiers and Grands Crus, mainly Pinot Noir. First pressed and traditionally vinified to avoid oxidation, these wines are aged for three to four years in our cellars. Royale Réserve Non Dosé, Brut and Rosé harmonize perfectly, accompanied by reserve wines aged in barrels and managed in solera to enrich their complexity while preserving their minerality.

Character: Vintages

The vintage cuvées, from prestigious Champagne terroirs such as Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and the Côte des Blancs in Premiers and Grands Crus, reflect the character of each harvest. Selecting the best grapes from a given year, each cuvée has its own unique style, but all share an elegant vinosity. The wines, pressed first, follow a traditional vinification process, with some aged a minimum of six years on lees in bottle and cellar for added complexity.

- Grand Blanc Millésimé
- Sublime Réserve Sec Millésimé

L'Héritage: Cuvée 1522

Cuvées 1522 and 1522 Rosé pay tribute to the historic installation of the Philipponnat family in Ay in 1522. These exceptional champagnes are made from the House's finest wines, mostly Grands Crus, partly vinified in wood without malolactic fermentation. Cuvée 1522 Rosé incorporates red Mareuil wine from Premier Cru vines. Extra-brut (4 g/l), they reflect the minerality of the Champagne terroir, resulting from Philipponnat's great blends. Aged six to eight years in cellars, these subtle, well-balanced champagnes favor balance over power.

L'Absolu : Clos des Goisses

Philipponnat makes a wine of exceptional power in Champagne from grapes grown on Clos des Goisses, the oldest and most famous vineyard in the region, with its vertiginous 45-degree slope. Owned by the House for almost a century, this exceptional south-facing vineyard stands out for its extreme slope. More than just a prestige cuvée, it represents the wine of an absolutely unique terroir.

What is non-dosed champagne? Brut Nature or zero dosage.

Non-dosed champagne, also known as "Brut Nature" or "Zéro Dosage", is a type of champagne in which no sugar is added after the disgorging phase. Usually, during the preparation of champagne, a small amount of liqueur d'expédition (a mixture of sugar and wine) is added to balance the wine's natural acidity and determine its level of sweetness. However, in the case of non-dosé champagne, no expedition liqueur is added, making this type of champagne very dry, with little or no residual sugar, thus highlighting the purity of the wine and its terroir. This can result in champagnes that are very fresh, straightforward and sometimes tauter on the palate, offering a very different taste experience from traditionally dosed champagnes.
