#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

History of the House of Perrier-Jouët

The Champagne House of Perrier-Jouët has a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1811 by Pierre Perrier and his wife Adèle Jouët. Originating in exceptional Champagne terroirs such as Aÿ, Mailly-Champagne, Avize and Cramant, these terroirs have shaped the distinctive identity of the House's cuvées. These champagnes are renowned for their singular style, combining aromatic richness, refinement and unique subtlety. This combination creates sparkling wines that captivate the most demanding palates, offering an unrivalled sensory experience.

As early as 1861, Perrier-Jouët became the official champagne of Queen Victoria, then that of the French Imperial Court, gaining royal and imperial recognition. This recognition reinforced the House's reputation as a producer of exceptional Champagnes, appreciated by the most eminent personalities of the day.

In 1959, the House became part of the GH Mumm champagne company, while retaining its unique identity. It was also at this time that Perrier-Jouët distinguished itself with the iconic bottle for its prestige cuvée, "Belle Époque", designed in 1969 by the famous glass artist Émile Gallé. This bottle, adorned with anemone flowers, has become emblematic and embodies the artistic aesthetic and delicacy associated with the brand. It symbolizes not only luxury champagne, but also the art and craftsmanship that go into creating each bottle of Perrier-Jouët.

This rich history, combined with traditions of excellence and innovation, positions the Maison Perrier-Jouët as one of the world's most prestigious champagne houses, gracefully blending the heritage of the past with contemporary creativity.

Champagne Perrier-Jouët terroir

Perrier-Jouët embodies Champagne excellence thanks to an exceptional vineyard located in the heart of the Golden Triangle, on the Côte des Blancs. Nearly 99.2% of the vineyard is classified on the Échelle des Crus, a chalk terroir that gives the grapes a unique minerality and freshness, revealing the floral notes emblematic of Champagne. The botanical heritage of the founders, who were passionate about horticulture, has guided the House since the 19th century, favoring Chardonnay, a demanding grape variety, in a bold and innovative approach. Under the expert guidance of Chef de Caves Séverine Frerson, this richness translates into a refined, complex style, bearing witness to a tradition perpetuated by a deep understanding of terroir.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

The Champagne appellation

The Champagne appellation is reserved for sparkling wines produced in the Champagne wine-growing region of France. It is not only a sparkling wine, but also a protected and regulated geographical denomination. Only wines from this region that meet strict criteria can be called "Champagne". They are made from specific grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, following precise winemaking methods such as the méthode traditionnelle or méthode champenoise.

This has made their champagne famous the world over. By choosing the Côte des Blancs, in the heart of Champagne's prestigious "golden triangle", the founders also established strong links with the finest producers of grands crus, benefiting from an ideal terroir for growing Chardonnay, which became the house's signature grape variety.
