#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
The History of Champagne Laurent-Perrier
The story of Champagne Laurent-Perrier is one of passion, commitment and innovation.
Founded in 1812 by André-Michel Pierlot in Tours-sur-Marne, this small company quickly became a symbol of quality and tradition. In 1939, the arrival of Marie-Louise de Nonancourt marked a turning point, while her sons, including Bernard de Nonancourt, distinguished themselves in the Resistance during the Second World War. After the war, Bernard de Nonancourt took over the reins of the House in 1948, infusing it with a pioneering spirit and a distinctive style of freshness and elegance. Over the decades, the House prospered and distinguished itself, even entering the Second Marché of the Paris Stock Exchange in 1999.
The de Nonancourt family remains an essential pillar of the company, with the arrival of new members such as Lucie Pereyre de Nonancourt in 2019. In 2004, Michel Fauconnet becomes the third Chef de Cave, continuing the commitment to quality and excellence. In 2023, Maximilien Bernardeau takes over, bringing fresh expertise and a passion for oenology.
The Terroir of Champagne Laurent-Perrier
The Champagne Laurent-Perrier terroir is rooted in France's prestigious Champagne region, where vines thrive in a unique climate and characteristic soils. The soils of Champagne are characterized by their diversity, ranging from clay to limestone to chalk, each contributing in its own way to the quality and complexity of the grapes. This diversity enables Laurent-Perrier's winemakers to select the best plots for each grape variety, to produce wines of great finesse and elegance.
The House places great importance on preserving its terroir and sustainable viticultural practices, thus guaranteeing the longevity of its vineyards and the consistent quality of its champagnes. By cultivating a close relationship with the land and respecting natural cycles, Laurent-Perrier perpetuates the heritage of its terroir while innovating for the future.
#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées
The Champagne appellation
The Champagne appellation designates both a renowned French wine-growing region and a sparkling wine produced in this region. Located in northeastern France, Champagne is famous for its unique terroir and wine-growing climate. The main grapes used in Champagne production are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
The "Champagne" appellation is also protected by law, and only wines produced in the Champagne region to specific standards can legally bear this name. This is why other sparkling wines produced in other regions or countries are generally called "vin mousseux" or bear regional names such as "Cava" in Spain or "Prosecco" in Italy.
