Champagne Gosset

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Maison Gosset

Maison Gosset has a rich history dating back to 1584, when Pierre Gosset decided to open a wine trading house in Aÿ-Champagne. For sixteen generations, the Gosset family has perpetuated traditional know-how in Champagne winemaking, maintaining a traditional family craft.

In 2009, the company acquired a historic 2-hectare estate in Épernay, which will open to the public in July 2021, thus expanding its production capacity and its roots in the Champagne region.

Maison Gosset's traditional know-how has been passed down for more than four centuries, with particular attention paid to the originality and quality of its Champagne wines. The house perpetuates a unique style, characterized by great mineral freshness and deep vinosity, resulting from a singular winemaking method that preserves the freshness of the grapes' aromas.

The Gosset style is interpreted by a passionate team, led by Odilon de Varine, Deputy General Manager and Cellar Master, and Gabrielle Malagu, also Cellar Master. They perpetuate the work of their predecessors, crafting wines of great depth, elegance and complexity, where the bubbles sublimate the wine, as former cellar master Jean-Pierre Mareigner liked to say.

The Terroir of Champagne Gosset, in Epernay

The terroir of Champagne is a fundamental concept that encompasses several geographical, geological and climatic elements that contribute to the specificity of the region's wines. Located in northeastern France, the Champagne terroir is characterized by a cool continental climate, limestone and clay soils, and sun-exposed hillsides.

Champagne Gosset, a 140-hectare vineyard

In the case of Maison Gosset, based in Épernay, terroir is at the heart of their production philosophy. They draw on a selection of grapes from 140 hectares of vines spread throughout the Champagne region. This diversity of terroirs enables them to create cuvées that are both harmonious and recognizable from one year to the next.

Épernay, in particular, is a region renowned for its Champagne vineyards. The limestone soils of this area give the grapes a certain minerality and distinctive freshness, which are reflected in the final wines.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

The Champagne appellation

The Champagne appellation designates both a wine-growing region in northeastern France and a renowned sparkling wine produced in this region. Champagne is made from specific grape varieties, mainly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, using special winemaking methods, including bottle fermentation to create its famous bubbles.

Gosset Champagnes offer connoisseurs great aromatic richness thanks to the absence of malolactic fermentation. Emblematic cuvées include Gosset Celebris, an exceptional vintage Champagne that consolidates the house's reputation in prestigious circles. In 1584, Pierre Gosset, alderman of Aÿ and winemaker, was producing still wines, often reds, from his own vines.

The use of the antique bottle, adorned with a distinctive label called "medaillon en sautoir", adds an extra touch of elegance to these world-renowned Champagnes. Even today, the various champagnes are presented in exact replicas of the bottles used by the house since the 18th century.
