#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
The history of Champagne Haton
Champagne Jean-Noël Haton, founded in 1928, is a family-run business located in Damery, in the heart of Champagne's finest crus. The history of the House dates back to 1610, when François Haton acquired the first plots of land in Damery, under the reign of Louis XIII. Proud of its roots and resolutely looking to the future, the Haton family embodies almost four centuries of Champagne history. Under the direction of René Haton, heir to the founder Octave Haton, the House experienced remarkable growth in the 1970s.
Champagne Jean-Noël Haton
Today, Jean-Noël Haton and his son Sébastien carry on this tradition, crafting Champagnes according to traditional and meticulous practices, with the sole aim of striving for excellence. They emphasize respect for the soil, yield control, the quest for optimal ripeness and parcel-based vinification.
Champagne Jean-Noël Haton, representing the family's know-how, also benefits from solid partnerships with other Champagne winemakers, broadening the range of vintages available to create their cuvées.
Champagne Haton & Fils/ Filles
Haton & Fils/Filles, founded in 1928 by Eugène Haton and his son Octave, also continues the family tradition in Damery. Managed by Philippe Haton, one of Eugène's grandsons, assisted by his wife Isabelle and daughters Élodie and Ophélie, this branch of the family contributes to enriching the Champagne heritage with its own cuvées and its commitment to quality and tradition.
Thus, the story of Champagne Haton is that of a family dedicated to making exceptional Champagnes, rooted in its roots and combining tradition and innovation to offer wines that are emblematic of the Champagne region.
The Champagne Haton terroir, near Damery
The Maison Haton vineyard
The Champagne Haton vineyard is a renowned Champagne house located in the Marne Valley. With a surface area of 60 hectares of vines, 45 hectares of which are directly owned, Haton is firmly rooted in the region. The house's vineyards are spread over six different villages, each contributing to the diversity and quality of the grapes produced: Damery, Hautvillers (Premier Cru), Cumières (Premier Cru), Boursault, Fleury la Rivière and Vauciennes, Cuchery.
One of the particularities of the Haton house is its commitment to collaboration with other Champagne winemakers. In addition to its own vineyards, Haton has established partnerships with winemakers in other areas of the Champagne region. This approach enables it to integrate grape varieties and grapes from parcels outside its own lands into its blends.
This practice contributes to enriching the characteristics and complexity of the company's wines, taking advantage of the specific nuances brought by each terroir.
A grape variety for every terroir
The subtle variations in geology, climate and relief in Champagne create a multitude of micro-terroirs, each with its own characteristics that influence the choice of grape varieties and the quality of the wines produced.
In the Marne Valley, the stronghold of the Haton family, plots are often planted with black grape varieties such as pinot noir and pinot meunier. These grape varieties produce fruity wines with good vinosity, pleasant consistency and characteristic vivacity. The geology of the Marne Valley, with its clay-limestone soils and varied exposure, contributes to the diversity of wine profiles produced in this region.
The terroirs of the villages of Berru and Bassuet stand out for their chalk gravel subsoil, which is particularly well-suited to growing Chardonnay. The grapes harvested from these vineyards produce bold, powerful white wines with a distinctive structure that reflects the unique characteristics of their terroir.
The Côte des Blancs, famous for its Grands Crus villages such as Cramant and Oger, is renowned for its chalky soils and sunny exposure. These ideal conditions favor the cultivation of Chardonnay, which flourishes in this terroir. Chardonnays produced in the Côte des Blancs are renowned for their freshness and minerality, with delicate aromas and a finesse on the palate that make for wines of great elegance. It is the expression of the whole that makes an exceptional Champagne.

Only wines produced according to specific standards, notably in terms of authorized grape varieties (chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot meunier), winemaking methods (méthode champenoise), and production conditions, can claim the Champagne appellation.
