History of Château Pichon Longueville Baron
The history of Château Pichon Baron dates back to the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV in France. It all began with Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, a wine merchant and steward of the prestigious Latour and Margaux estates. In 1689, he acquired vineyards near the Latour estate, creating the Enclos Rauzan, which became part of his daughter Thérèse's dowry.
In 1694, Thérèse married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville, and together they established the Pichon Longueville estate. This prosperous family estate passed to the Baron's descendants. Baron Raoul, their son, divided the estate into two parts, creating Château Pichon Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, for his three daughters.
Château Pichon Baron, founded by Baron Raoul, is officially classified as the Médoc's 2nd Grand Cru. In 1987, the AXA insurance company bought the estate, marking the start of a period of modernization and restoration. Under the direction of Christian Seely, the estate undertook major renovations, including rebuilding the vat room and cellar, as well as restoring the historic château.
Since then, Château Pichon Baron has continued to produce wines of excellence, in the tradition of the great wines of Pauillac. Exceptional vintages such as 1989, 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2015 have further enhanced its reputation. Today, the estate is magnified by an enchanting setting, with a majestic château and an underground barrel cellar, symbolizing the commitment to quality and innovation.
