Château La Fleur de Boüard

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Château La Fleur de Boüard

Driven by a deep conviction in the potential of the Lalande-de-Pomerol terroirs, Hubert de Boüard decided to invest in this vineyard in 1998. At the time, he acquired 25 hectares of vines, an area that has since expanded to 45 hectares. This acquisition marked the beginning of a remarkable winegrowing adventure. Over the years, Château La Fleur de Boüard has established itself as one of the leading names in the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation. Its wines, bearing the imprint of their exceptional terroir, embody the elegance and complexity characteristic of great Bordeaux wines. The passion and expertise of the entire team are reflected in every bottle, offering wine lovers an unforgettable taste experience.

The de Boüard de Laforest family

The de Boüard de Laforest family, famous in the Bordeaux wine world, is associated with the history of Château La Fleur de Boüard through its eminent member, Hubert de Boüard. As co-owner and technical director of the prestigious Château Angelus in Saint-Émilion, Hubert demonstrated his boldness and talent by acquiring a vineyard in Lalande-de-Pomerol in 1998, which would become Château La Fleur de Boüard. Guided by a passion for wine and a quest for excellence, the de Boüard de Laforest family brings their ancestral know-how to this family-run business, helping to produce wines of remarkable quality, while preserving the authenticity and finesse of the region's terroir.

The terroir of Château La Fleur de Boüard

Château La Fleur de Boüard is located in a privileged area, close to the confluence of the Dordogne and Isle rivers, which creates a microclimate favorable to viticulture. The warm temperatures encourage the accumulation of sugars in the grapes, while the humidity helps to keep the vines well hydrated, essential for their growth and development. In addition, the proximity of rivers and streams moderates extreme temperature variations, protecting vines from late spring frosts and excessive summer heat waves. Close to the confluence of the Dordogne and Isle rivers, Château La Fleur de Boüard enjoys a sunny, warm and humid climate, ideal for vine-growing. The estate, planted mainly with Merlot, rests on diversified soils that enrich the complexity of the wines produced.

On the Néac plateau, the sandy-clay surface and gravelly subsoil offer a perfect balance between drainage and water retention. The Lalande de Pomerol plateau, with its gravelly hilltops and 15 to 20% clay, ensures good drainage while maintaining water reserves. Finally, the remaining hectares, located on gravelly clay ridges, enable the vines to root deeply. The estate implements environmentally-friendly agroecological practices, such as sowing red fescue and green manures like fodder radish and common vetch, to improve soil structure and promote biodiversity.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation, located on the right bank of the Gironde near Pomerol, is renowned for its elegant, expressive red wines. Although less well known than its illustrious neighbors, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, Lalande-de-Pomerol boasts a unique terroir and climatic conditions favorable to viticulture. The main grape varieties used are Merlot, which brings roundness and fruitiness, Cabernet Franc, which contributes finesse and elegance, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings structure and richness.

Château La Fleur de Boüard produces a varied range of cuvées reflecting the richness of its terroir. The first wine, Château La Fleur de Boüard, is the spearhead of the estate, representing the culmination and pillar of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation. Le Plus, produced in small quantities from the oldest vines, embodies the quintessence of the terroir, with an extended ageing period of 33 months, including 18 on fine lees, bringing finesse and freshness. Le Lion de La Fleur de Boüard, the second wine from the young vines, is a pleasure wine featuring fruit with gentle extraction.

In addition to traditional wines, Hubert de Boüard offers a collection of monocépages inspired by Burgundian practices. Pinot Noir, delicate and subtle, and Syrah, gourmand and evocative of the Rhône Valley, enrich the range. Two white wines complete the offer: a Chardonnay, round and elegant, and a Sauvignon, fresh and precise, perfect with seafood or as an aperitif.

Blend wines include Château Tour du Pas Saint-Georges, from the rare Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion appellation, and Château du Rosaire, balanced with a Merlot base. Together, these cuvées demonstrate Château La Fleur de Boüard's commitment to producing exceptional wines while respecting traditions and exploring new winemaking avenues.
