#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
The history of Domaine Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon, based in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy, was founded by Michel Niellon in the 1950s.
Now run by Michel Coutoux, it is famous for its top-quality white wines, and has earned a reputation for excellence thanks to carefully selected vineyards, including premier crus and grand crus. Under the direction of Michel Niellon, then his son Jean-Michel Niellon, the domaine maintains high standards, focusing on the authentic expression of terroir and Burgundian tradition.
Domaine Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon, Burgundy's gem of a vineyard, covers 7.5 hectares, with an emphasis on Chardonnay (2/3) and Pinot Noir (1/3).
The estate's wines, such as Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Vergers de Niellon, offer singular substance and rich unctuosity. Its bottles are distinguished by an almost oily viscosity, testifying to the estate's unique know-how and the natural richness of old, low-yielding vines.
Domaine Michel Niellon, owner of parcels in Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champgains, offers cuvées with remarkable concentration, fullness and fatness, guaranteeing optimal ageing. Its reputation as a producer of exceptionally dense wines in the Côte-d'Or attracts connoisseurs, with bottles from the estate prized for their exceptional quality and honeyed opulence.
Domaine Michel Niellon terroir
The terroir of Domaine Michel Niellon, located in the Burgundy villages of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachetis characterized by ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay, the region's emblematic grape variety.
The estate's vines flourish on slopes with favorable exposure, favoring optimal ripening of the grapes. The soils, composed of limestone and clay, contribute to the complexity of the wines by bringing distinct characteristics to the terroir.
The limited size of the plots and the constant quest for excellence define the domaine's philosophy, contributing to the rarity of its wines. Integrated vineyard management and manual harvesting are careful practices aimed at preserving the integrity of the fruit and fully expressing the potential of the terroir.
These extremely old vines, producing very low yields, offer a wine rich in natural glycerol, a characteristic to which we were no longer accustomed, even in the grand crus.
