Laurent Roumier Estate

#PROPERTY : History & Terroir

History of the Laurent Roumier estate

The Laurent Roumier estate

Founded in 1924 by George Roumier in Burgundy, this wine estate was passed on to his grandson, Laurent Roumier, who gave it his name in 1991. A force of acquisitions, it began with 4 hectares and today extends to 12 hectares, focusing on the production of red wines and a white appellation thanks to sustainable agriculture.

Located entirely in Chambolle-Musigny, near Beaune in Côte-d'Or (21), Laurent Roumier's estate comprises mainly old vines averaging 35 years old, cultivated in the traditional way. The domaine produces red wines such as Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and Chambolle-Musigny Village, as well as a discreet white, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits La Poirelotte. This is part of the estate division established in 1924 by Laurent Roumier's grandfather, George Roumier.

Georges Roumier

In 1924, Georges Roumier founded the family domaine in Burgundy, with the ambition of creating one of the greatest estates in the region. His son Jean-Marie joined him in 1961, and thanks to a series of judicious acquisitions, the domaine became a worldwide reference for tasters and critics alike.

Laurent Roumier

Laurent Roumier, grandson of Georges Roumier, continues his family's winegrowing tradition on part of the land that once belonged to his grandfather. For him, being a winemaker is not just a job, but a passion that runs through his veins.

He is also the cousin of Christophe Roumier, who currently manages the famous George Roumier estate, founded by their grandfather. For many years, Laurent worked alongside his brother on the family estate. However, it was in 1991 that he decided to set up his own winery.

Initially, his estate covered just four hectares of leased vines from the Roumier family and other owners. Thus began his winemaking adventure, with the vision of crafting exceptional wines that reflect his deep attachment to terroir and tradition.

Despite his success, Laurent Roumier is renowned for his discretion. Laurent Roumier embodies the passion, tradition and art of winemaking handed down from generation to generation within the Roumier family.

An exceptional terroir

The different "climates" present in the vineyards, depending on their location, influence the personality of the wines. For example, on the northern slopes, the Les Cras climat produces wines that are close to those of Bonnes-Mares, while Derrière la Grange produces firm, structured wines. In the alluvial fan, the wines are fine and complex, with subtle aromas. Although some of these wines can be enjoyed young, it is advisable to let the bottles age in the cellar for a few years.

The Laurent Roumier estate cultivates its vines entirely naturally, without the use of fertilizers or herbicides, opting for traditional winemaking methods and harvesting by hand.

#WINES FROM THE DOMAIN: Appellations and Cuvées

The Chambolle-Musigny appellation

Hautes-Côtes de Nuits La Poirelotte, with its golden color and persistent fruity aromas of lemon, apple and hazelnut, embodies the finesse and elegance of the emblematic terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

Wines produced in this region are often described as the most "feminine" of the Côte, characterized by less power. The appellation communale covers the eastern and western edges of the vineyard, while the 24 premiers crus and the 2 grands crus Musigny and Bonnes-Mares are located in the center and south of this zone.

As a whole, Chambolais wines display the distinctive characteristics of the Pinot Noir grape, offering juices with fruity aromas of cherry and raspberry, enhanced by floral notes such as violet.

Domaine Laurent Roumier: A key figure in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation

Domaine Laurent Roumier, based exclusively in Chambolle-Musigny, has established itself over the years as a key player in this prestigious appellation. It strives to develop the stony terroir in continuity with the renowned Côte de Nuits, highlighting the region's emblematic grape variety, pinot noir. The vineyard extends around the combe de Chambolle, where two slopes are covered with thin brown soils. These soils rest on a Bajocian bedrock of entrusted limestone, outcropping in places. Although the subsoils in this area contain less clay than in other parts of the Côte de Nuits, they are particularly well-suited to growing Pinot Noir.

The red wine is made from the Chambolle-Musigny terroir, with a majority of old vines with an average age of 35 years, grown using traditional methods. On this stony soil, Pinot Noir produces an elegant wine with exceptional aromatic richness. It can be enjoyed young, and can be kept for 5 to 10 years. Serve at a recommended temperature of 15°C.

Some exceptional vintages :

Laurent-Roumier Clos de Vougeot

Laurent Roumier's Clos de Vougeot, a grand cru, is more full-bodied than Chambolle. It draws its power from rich, deep soils. Aged 18 months in new barrels, it boasts a deep ruby color and a bewitching nose of red and black fruits, flowers, licorice and mint. On the palate, its exceptional density is supported by fine tannins. Served at 16°C, it is the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as sautéed beef with truffles, leg of lamb or pigeon au sang.

Laurent-Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, key vintages: 2018, 2022

This Chambolle-Musigny comes from five parcels around the village (average age 35 years, total 1.5 ha). One of these parcels, over 50 years old, is particularly well exposed next to the famous Musigny grand cru. This is an elegant, silky wine, with a density comparable to that of a Premier Cru.

It has a brilliant ruby-red color, with delicate aromas of violets and red berries. After aeration, notes of undergrowth, truffle and even animal nuances emerge. On the palate, it offers unequalled finesse, an elegant structure, a silky texture and fine tannins.

The finish is fruity and dense. Serve at 15°C with roast guinea fowl, poultry in cream sauce, or turkey escalope in cream sauce.

Laurent Roumier Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Poirelotte

This Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits, christened "La Poirelotte", comes from a parcel of less than two hectares located in the lieu-dit of the same name, nestled in the heart of clay-limestone terroirs of rare quality. Laurent Roumier quickly recognized the exceptional potential of this terroir, and is the only winemaker to produce Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits in the commune of Chambolle. He ages it so that connoisseurs can enjoy it relatively quickly, unlike his more prestigious cuvées which sometimes require decades of ageing. As heir to an illustrious Burgundy family, Laurent Roumier has created a wine of remarkable intensity.

This Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits La Poirelotte has a garnet-red color with redcurrant highlights and aromas of red fruit, smoke and flowers, particularly peony. On the palate, it's greedy, fine and silky, with a structure underpinned by refreshing acidity and rounded tannins.

To appreciate its full splendor, enjoy it within five years of bottling. Serve it at 16°C and pair it with dishes such as roast chicken, roast quail or autumn-flavored rack of veal.
