#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
The history of Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin
Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin is rooted in a rich and storied winegrowing history that goes back several centuries. Chablis' winegrowing history really began in the 3rd century, with the first plantings of vines by the Gallo-Romans. Over the centuries, viticulture in Chablis has had its ups and downs, marked by events such as the Hundred Years' War, wars and devastating periods of frost.
The Droin family, owners of the estate
The Droin family, owners of the estate for several generations, have weathered these storms with perseverance and determination. Edme-Auguste Droin, Louis Droin, Marcel Droin and Paul Droin have all contributed to the history and renown of the estate over the decades, despite challenges such as frost, phylloxera and the vagaries of the weather.
Jean-Paul Droin, successor to the family line, joined the domaine in 1951 and has worked passionately to preserve and develop the family winegrowing heritage. Under his leadership, the estate has continued to grow and prosper, with a focus on quality and the unique expression of Chablis terroirs.
Benoît Droin, Jean-Paul's son, joined the domaine in 1975, bringing his oenological expertise and innovative vision to modernize viticultural practices while preserving the tradition and authenticity of the domaine's wines.
The Terroir of Domaine Jean-Paul and Benoît Droin
In the heart of the rolling hills of Chablis, Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin stands out for its deep attachment to the land and its precious treasures. Nestled in a landscape where every inch of soil tells a thousand-year-old story, this family-run estate embodies the excellence and authenticity of the region's wines.
The vineyards of Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin flourish on soils of remarkable geological richness. Petit Chablis, emblematic of this terroir, reveals all its finesse thanks to a Portlandian soil, also known as Barrois limestone. At an altitude of almost 200 meters, these vines flourish on plateaus overlooking Kimmeridgian layers, offering a unique environment conducive to the purest expression of the Chablis terroir.
Kimmeridgian marl: the treasure of the terroir
The terroir's unique characteristics are revealed through a diversity of soils. From gray marl to limestone beds, sometimes adorned with Exogyra virgula fossils, each parcel tells its own story through its distinctive geological components. From shallow soils to rough Kimmeridgian marls, sticky clays and limestone pebbles, each vineyard offers a rich and complex sensory palette.
