Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

#PROPERTY: History & Terroir

The history of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

The history of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze dates back to 1850, when Jean-Baptiste Laroze established a winery in Gevrey-Chambertin. Since then, each generation has helped shape and perpetuate the family winemaking tradition. Today, Caroline and Nicolas Drouhin, descendants of Christine and Philippe, proudly carry the torch for the sixth generation of this lineage committed to viticulture.

Félix Laroze, son of Jean-Baptiste, ensured the continuity of the business, passing on his know-how to his own daughter, Suzanne Laroze. In 1919, a landmark event sealed the fate of the estate: Suzanne's marriage to Alexandre Drouhin, already owner of Chambolle-Musigny. This alliance was much more than a simple family union, it was the catalyst for the fusion of two exceptional winegrowing heritages.

The Terroir of Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze embodies an exceptional heritage, with Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village appellations, testifying to the richness and diversity of its prestigious terroirs.

Successive generations have brilliantly pursued the mission of developing the estate by investing in hillside vineyards. This investment, though risky at the outset, proved to be a wise inspiration.

Thanks to this strategy, Le Domaine, Drouhin-Laroze, now ranks among the most prestigious on the Côte. The combination of the diversity, quality and breadth of its appellations makes it a benchmark in the wine world.

Hillside vineyards, a judicious choice of terroir

Hillside vineyards, planted on slopes or hills, offer an ideal setting for growing vines. This configuration offers advantages such as improved natural drainage, optimal sun exposure and microclimate variation. Rainwater runs off efficiently, avoiding problems associated with stagnation. Grapes benefit from uniform ripening thanks to optimal sun exposure. Although hillside cultivation may require more intensive tillage, winemakers take advantage of these conditions to produce grapes of superior quality, contributing to the prestigious reputation of some hillside vineyards, particularly in renowned wine-growing regions such as Burgundy.

The Domaine Drouhin-Laroze vineyard

The Domaine Drouhin-Laroze vineyard produces around 50,000 bottles a year, carefully divided between different appellations. The majority, 46%, is dedicated to Grand Cru appellations, including such prestigious names as Musigny, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Clos de Vougeot, Bonnes Mares, Latricières Chambertin, and Chapelle Chambertin. Another significant segment, representing 14% of production, is devoted to Premier Cru appellations, including such renowned terroirs as Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaut Saint Jacques, Au Closeau, Craipillot, and Clos Prieur. Finally, the remaining 40% of production is dedicated to Village appellations, testifying to the diversity and breadth of the terroirs worked with passion by the Domaine. This strategic distribution reflects the estate's ongoing commitment to quality and the faithful representation of the unique characteristics of each terroir.

What are the differences between Maison Laroze de Drouhin and Domaine Drouhin-Laroze?

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is a renowned winery, famous for its vineyards in Burgundy, particularly in Gevrey-Chambertin, and its production of exceptional wines, including Grand Cru and Premier Cru appellations. However, Maison Laroze de Drouhin refers to a trading house, created in 2008 under the impetus of Caroline Drouhin, whose aim was to complete and diversify the product offering through the purchase of grapes or must for wine production.
