#PROPERTY: History & Terroir
History of Domaine De la Vieille Julienne
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, acquired in 1905 by the great-grandfather of current owner Jean-Paul Daumen, has a rich and prestigious history. Originally situated on the heights of the Clavin locality in the 17th century, the estate now extends over 20 hectares of old vines in a single block, mainly dedicated to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and part to Côte-du-Rhône.
To respect the spirit of the appellation, the estate has planted emblematic grape varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Counoise, Cinsault, and even rare varieties like Muscardin and Vaccarèse.
This family-run business is renowned for its commitment to the environment. Certified organic and then biodynamic, it practices ecological viticulture and actively protects the soil by limiting treatments on the vines, abandoning the use of chemicals... Hand-picking and natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts also contribute to creating exceptional wines. The reds, concentrated with aromas of black fruits and wild berries, are aged in oak barrels. Then, after 18 months in oak foudres, the wine is bottled, unfined and unfiltered.
The Terroir of Domaine De la Vieille Julienne
The Terroir of Domaine de la Vieille Julienne plays a crucial role in the quality and personality of its wines. The estate is partly located in the famous appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Known for its varied terroir, composed mainly of galets roulés, sands, clays and limestones. These pebbles help to store heat during the day and release it at night, helping to ripen the grapes. While the other part, located in the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation is characterized by Miocene safres covered with red sand and clay. This early part of the slope offers ideal conditions for the production of soft, seductive red wines.

#DOMAINE WINES: Appellations and Cuvées
The appellations of Domaine De la Vieille Julienne
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is established in two renowned Rhône Valley appellations, each offering unique characteristics that are reflected in the exceptional wines produced by the estate.
Domaine De la Vieille Julienne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation
This appellation is one of the most prestigious in the region, located in the southern Rhône Valley. Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are often recognized for their power, complexity and ageing potential. The grape varieties authorized in this appellation mainly include Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and other accessory varieties. Châteauneuf-du-Pape's terroir, characterized by rolled pebbles, sands and clay soils, contributes to the diversity of wine profiles produced.
Domaine De la Vieille Julienne, Côte-du-Rhône appellation
The Côtes-du-Rhône appellation is broader, encompassing a variety of terroirs along the Rhône. It allows a great diversity of wine styles, including warmer regions and cooler areas. The grape varieties permitted in Côtes-du-Rhône wines are varied, offering producers the freedom to blend red varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and white varieties such as Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Viognier.
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne wines
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne stands out for the remarkable quality of its cuvées. They include :
Côtes-du-Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin
Côtes-du-Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin Blanc
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserved
Among these, the Lieu-Dit-Clavin red Côtes-du-Rhône stands out. Made from Miocene safres overlaid with red sand and clay, this red wine has a tender elegance, while borrowing the muscular character of the neighboring Trois Sources terroir. With vines averaging 85 years old, grape varieties such as Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Bourboulenc, Clairette and Grenache Blanc help create a cuvée acclaimed by experts such as Jeb Dunnuck and Robert Parker.
The Lieu-Dit-Clavin Blanc cuvée, also in Côtes-du-Rhône, comes from the northern part of this lieu-dit, characterized by marl and limestone. The vines, averaging 65 years of age, and the Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier varieties produce a fresh, sloping white wine. Rave reviews from Jeb Dunnuck and John Livingstone-Learmonth highlight its clean, refreshing style.
Cuvée Les Trois Sources in Châteauneuf-du-Pape embodies balanced power and finesse, situated on a hillside flat between Lieu-dit Clavin and Les Hauts-lieux. With an average age of 75 years and a variety of grape varieties including grenache noir, cinsault, syrah, counoise, mourvèdre, muscardin, terret noir, vaccarèse, grenache blanc, bourboulenc, clairette and picardan, this red wine has earned praise from renowned critics such as James Molesworth and Jeb Dunnuck, who describe it as a "singular wine" capturing the essence of the terroir.
Another Châteauneuf-du-Pape red cuvée, Les Hauts-lieux, also embodies the distinctive quality of Domaine de la Vieille Julienne. The grape varieties used are similar to those of the "Les Trois Sources" cuvée, contributing to the complexity and unique expression of this renowned appellation.
The grand cuvée Réservé is singular in its old vines with low yields. It is distinguished by its northern microclimate on the northern slope, which gives it its character.
